Tin Caps Going For Gold

Rumson, NJ - The Rumson Tin Caps battled through a very competitive Rookie Division This Spring in the Two River Little League (TRLL) regular season, earning a very respectable 2 seed for the 10-team, single elimination playoff tournament.

Excellence and persistence throughout the regular season earned them a first-round bye before hosting the Fair Haven Iron Pigs in quarter-final action. Their hard work over the past three months led to a 3-0 victory and place in the semifinals.

On a hot Saturday afternoon at Riverside Park, it was a hard-fought defensive battle between two great ball clubs. Hurlers Luke Read and Leighton Hagberg pitched three scoreless innings respectively for the Caps, combining for a two-hit shutout.

After four and a half scoreless innings, tensions were rising. That was until Avery “Clutch” Kliewe laced an RBI double into play, allowing Parker Lee to score the go ahead run and break the tie. The next batter, Jackson Polloway, smashed a huge two-run triple to put the Tin Caps up 3-0 in the bottom of the 5th.

Leighton Hagberg looked like Mariano Rivera on the mound as he confidently closed out the game at the top of the sixth with a perfect inning to secure the “W” for the Tin Caps.

It was truly a great all around team effort pitching, fielding and hitting by the Caps. Fans are excited as the Tin Caps return to the diamond on Wednesday, June 9 for what promises to be another great one contest.
